چکیده

Variability of solar power is a key driver in increasing the cost of integrating solar power into the electric grid because additional system resources are required to maintain the grid’s reliability. In this study, we characterize the variability in power output of six photovoltaic plants in the USA and Canada with a total installed capacity of 195MW (AC); it is based on minute-averaged data from each plant and the output from 390 inverters. We use a simplemetric, “daily aggregate ramp rate” to quantify, categorize, and compare daily variability across these multiple sites. With this metric, the effect of geographic dispersion is observed, while controlling for climatic differences across the plants. Additionally, we characterized variability due to geographical dispersion by simulating a step by step increase of the plant size at the same location. We observed maximum ramp rates for 5, 21, 48, and 80MWAC plants, respectively, as 0.7, 0.58, 0.53, and 0.43 times the plant’s capacity. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Implications of Wide-Area Geographic Diversity for Short-Term Variability of Solar Power

Worldwide interest in the deployment of photovoltaic generation (PV) is rapidly increasing. Operating experience with large PV plants, however, demonstrates that large, rapid changes in the output of PV plants are possible. Early studies of PV grid impacts suggested that short-term variability could be a potential limiting factor in deploying PV. Many of these early studies, however, lacked hig...

Mitigating Short-term Pv Output Intermittency

We approach the issue of short-term PV output intermittency from a management standpoint by determining the cost of actively mitigating it using “shock-absorbing” short-term energy buffers. Using three case studies in California, Hawaii and the southern US as experimental support, we determine this cost as a function of (1) the desired amount of variability mitigation; (2) the considered variab...

Estimating Annual Synchronized 1-min Power Output Profiles from Utility-scale Pv Plants at 10 Locations in Nevada for a Solar Grid Integration Study

We present an approach to simulate time-synchronized, one-minute power output from large photovoltaic (PV) generation plants in locations where only hourly irradiance estimates are available from satellite sources. The approach uses one-minute irradiance measurements from ground sensors in a climatically and geographically similar area. Irradiance is translated to power using the Sandia Array P...

Sensitivity analysis and parameters calculation of PV solar panel based on empirical data and two-diode circuit model

In this paper, a simple algorithm based on a two-diode circuit model of the solar cell is proposed for calculating different parameters of PV panels. The input parameters required for this algorithm are available from datasheets of the standard PV modules. The values of series and parallel resistances, as well as the recombination factor of Diode 2, are estimated through an iterative solution p...

The Photovoltaic Heat Island Effect: Larger solar power plants increase local temperatures

While photovoltaic (PV) renewable energy production has surged, concerns remain about whether or not PV power plants induce a "heat island" (PVHI) effect, much like the increase in ambient temperatures relative to wildlands generates an Urban Heat Island effect in cities. Transitions to PV plants alter the way that incoming energy is reflected back to the atmosphere or absorbed, stored, and rer...
